The spring sunshine warmed the wide fields of the Brimfield Market, where hundreds of tents and canopies stretched as far as the eye could see. The air was filled with a festive mix of voices, music from various performers, and the occasional call of birds overhead. Delicious aromas wafted from food trucks offering everything from gourmet grilled cheese to authentic Thai cuisine.

The family had come prepared for a full day of treasure hunting. Their red wagon, cushioned with comfortable pillows, served as a perfect chariot for Gigi and Libby when their little legs grew tired of walking. For now, though, the girls skipped ahead excitedly, pointing out things to each other.

“Look at this gorgeous copper pot,” Ellie said, examining a gleaming vessel at an antiques booth. “It would be perfect for our kitchen.” After some good-natured haggling, she added it to the wagon.

Courtney found vintage art books for the gallery, while Jenna discovered unique precious stones she could use in her jewelry designs. Mr. Finch seemed content to simply observe, though his eyes lit up when he found a vendor selling hand-crafted canes and walking sticks.

“Ice cream time!” Angie announced when they reached a vendor selling homemade varieties. Soon everyone was enjoying colorful cones - chocolate chip for the girls, maple walnut for Mr. Finch, and various other flavors for the sisters.

“This is just what we needed.” Courtney sighed contentedly. “A day away from work, mysteries, and suspicious characters.”

In a few minutes, those words would prove to be ironic.

As Jenna and Angie stood, admiring delicately carved scrimshaw pieces at a nautical booth, Gigi suddenly tugged at her mother's sleeve.

“Momma,” she said in a serious voice that seemed too old for her years. “See that man over there? I don't think he's very nice.”

Angie's motherly instincts immediately went into overdrive. “Where, honey? Who do you mean?”

Gigi pointed across the crowded aisle to a booth near the end of the row. A young man in crisp chinos and a long-sleeved shirt stood talking intently with a vendor who had paintings and rare coins displayed.

Angie's heart skipped a beat as recognition dawned on her. From the photographs they’d looked at and the descriptions given by people who had seen him, the young man appeared to be a perfect match for Donald Prior.

Jenna stepped closer to her twin, their shoulders touching. “Is that...?”

“It sure seems so.” Angie's voice was barely above a whisper. “Let's get closer.”

They started down the aisle, pulling the wagon behind them, but the market had grown crowded as more shoppers arrived. They found themselves stuck behind a group examining a large piece of furniture, forced to wait as the transaction was completed. By the time they could move again, the young man had vanished.

When they reached the booth where he'd been standing, Jenna addressed the vendor. “You were just speaking with a young man a few minutes ago.”

The vendor, an older man with weathered hands, stared at her blankly.

“Do you know who he is? Do you know his name?” Jenna pressed.
